Scout Hosts 2nd Annual Kansas City ITS Symposium

Kansas City Scout hosted its 2nd Annual Kansas City ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Symposium, May 6, 2009. The symposium convened at the Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park, KS.

The purpose of the symposium is to bring ITS professionals together to gain valuable information, share past experiences, build on lessons learned and increase collaboration on future initiatives within the Kansas City region. Kansas City has so many great technology projects already in operation, under construction and scheduled for the future. Scout tagged as "Kansas City's Traffic Management System" realizes the need to facilitate a forum that provokes needed discussion and communication on key topics that affect this region.

The Symposium consisted of quick fire presentations from representatives of the cities of Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa and Wyandotte County Unified Government in Kansas and the City of Kansas City, Missouri as well as both the Kansas and Missouri Departments of Transportation to bring attendees abreast of ITS projects in their respective organizations. The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) was represented in addition to Operation Green Light in the quick fire session.

The regional featured speakers were Carlos Sun, Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Missouri-Columbia and Tom Ryan Senior Traffic Engineer for HDR Engineering Inc. in Springfield, Missouri. These presenters spoke about Arterial Service Patrol Traffic Response and Performance Measures.

The national keynote speaker was Steve Kuciemba who is the National ITS & System Operations Manager at Parsons Brinckerhoff located in the Washington D.C. Metro Area. Steve gave a presentation on Travel Information and 511.

This years symposium was sponsored by Brown Traffic Products, Inc, Cambridge Systematics, Capital Electric, Delcan, HNTB, Iteris, Network Integration Services, Open Roads, Parsons – Brinckerhoff, Sensys Networks, Telvent and Transcore.
